LFS Questions using software from distros


Ive got a few question before i try this? Ive got 3 distro mandrake 10 redhat9 and my current one i use slackware, If i want to use the mandrake 2.6 kernel that came with it will this affect my LFS is anyway e.g. will it come up with mandrake when i start it or anythin, ok what im getting at is can i use the software allready on my other distros cds' coze ive got a slow pc connection so i cant really download anything big, and can i make the file managment .tar.gz because i like it or do i have to use .deb or what. It says in the book that you need at least 1.2 gigs for a distro is this trure ive got a powerful pc and a slower old pc and wanted to make a small distro for my old pc that can run fluxbox etc. O.k. u get the idea of wat i want to do please help me.

I think that what you should try is to dual boot two different kernels. Set up your bootloader to dual boot two different kernels with both boot options using the same / partition. Then try booting into the Mandrake kernel and see if it works.

Ive been told that the kernel that comes with mandrake has mandrake patches on it, so i cant use it. But programs in slackware are from source so i can use them. Ill download the kernel and get the rest of the stuff off slackware i think, if anyone has better ideas help please.
