Let me rave about K3b!!!
 

I installed this proggie, essentially myself, a couple of days ago. I'm completely sick AND tired of booting into Winders to make burning of CDs the easy way, and I honestly, truly HATE X CDRoast. I spent a good three hours researching, making sure I had all dependencies met (o, the joy that is Synaptic, it makes checking my packages so much easier - he, me like-y GUI!), researching known bugs, so on and so forth. Then for the eye-candy, screen shots. I knew this was the proggie for me and would replace Nero.

Ultimately, I had damned near ALL the packages already in my RH9, just not all needed for ripping and burning were enabled. Heh, once again, Synaptic makes my life feel sweet. Turns out that I needed to d/l exactly two things: K3b itself, and something called "normalize". I'm not so good with the tarballs/tarballs.gz's, though I always remember to create a new directory, but I'm rather forgetful, and am usually talking with the beau when I say something like.. "Ok.., um.. gunzip <space> then the package name?" But, believe it or not (I sure couldn't, especially after the DAYS we've spent trying to get my Palm m515 seen, let alone sync'd.. will likely be posting about this headache later on, but still searching, searching, searching) other than my seeming inability to remember what to do with a tarball.. you know, I'd remember if he'd stop taking over all the time, I need to do this stuff myself! Oh! Anyway, that was my only problem, consistent as ever, unzipping/unpacking the tarballs.

Then, I installed K3b, opened it up and OH MY GOD is it SWEET! I LOVE this program! There seems to be only one downside to it, and seeing as how, in my 3.5 years of using computers I've never had to do this it's of little consequence at this point to me, and that is that (according to the beau) I cannot copy image files with it. <shrug> Well, like I said, I haven't ever had to do that, especially now that I've been colored Linux. All I ever want to burn are photos, some docs, and mainly tunes to take along with me. Pretty damn neat schtuff!

I haven't yet fully explored the program, there's a lot you can do as far as fartin' and fiddlin' with the actual files in Nero, but if I understood my research correctly, I can do this with K3b as well. Yay!

Now, onto my Palm issues <sigh> let the bummage ensue, well over-ridden by the happiness with this fine shiznit.

i agree, it's really great. i hate xcdroast, too. k3b is so much more usable. i just installed it a few days ago myself, but so far it looks great.

I'll 3rd that. It's a fantastic Cd burner. The best GUI based burner for linux... in my humble opinion.

But what do you mean by "cannot copy image files"?

Well, that was my beau's comment. I think he means .iso and/or the kind of image files that one copies when ghosting (?). Honestly, when he mentioned it I was in the midst of battling jpilot and quite irritated (not to mention that I'm already easily distracted).

However, it seems that with burning .iso's in K3b, what I've Googled so far (because I do advise folks on fishkeeping, I know how incredibly irritating it is when folks want stuff spoonfed to them) says to go into Audio CD burn and choose .iso burn.
HOWEVER! (There's always a butt) In the GUI/version I have, one can only choose this from the tools for DVD burning, and since I have neither a DVD reader nor writer, I set up nothing for this feature to be enabled. If I discover that I have .iso's I would wish to burn.. well.. I might not be so hot about this thing, but, being as new as I am, and as relatively ignorant as I am, I have no idea how problematic this issue is. <shrug> Truthfully, because I don't really have an understanding of what image files are (we're not talking jpg's and that sort of thing)

I will relay the trouble I had yesterday with a prophylactic warning about docking of views: ya know those little arrows you see in the corners of each view (directory, tree, projects)?

DON'T HIT THE TINY ARROWS!!!!

You will find yourself incredibly frustrated with the absolute inability to sort how to set your dialog windows back where they were. (Me have sneaky clicky finger) Resistance is IMPERATIVE, do not click the arrows. It seems to be a known bug, and wanna guess where we found the answer? Archived right here (thank the good lord for this site, or whoever you want to, but thank 'em). I was ready to uninstall and reinstall I was getting so ticked off. Heh..

Don't know what to tell you, I read everything I could, both on their site and elsewhere through Googling, and I know you're not the only one. I'm still amazed that it's worked so well the very first time I set it up. <shrug> I hope you can find something that works well for you, I know the frustration, yet, I get so damned peeved at Windows now! It won't let me see certain things, won't let me do certain things, it's.. it's.. it's just sneaky is what it is!
I feel like I'm working with HAL when I'm in Windows!

just to clarify something: you can burn image files with k3b very easily. if you right click in the bottom "Welcome" area, you can add an icon for "Burn CD image." you can also do it from the menu, with Tools -> CD -> Burn CD image.

Hi.....add one more k3b raver!....I installed k3b yesterday and it's cool...in fact its the best Linux GUI App as far as looks are concerned....I feel, the simpler the application, the more easy it is to use....K3b looks just like that kind of app ....Synaptical, thanx for the valuable info...However, I havent explored k3b much....I just burned a Data CD for a test - it took 15 minutes to burn and verify data of 456 MB @ 40X...I think NERO does that faster, but still....I dont mind the slowness.....k3b sure rocks!
