Ldap is listening but won't do anything

I got openldap installed listening on port 389, But when I do an ldap search or and ldap add I get ldap_bind: Can't contact ldap server (-1). I'm new to ldap, I installed it according to its directions and everything installed ok. Ran "make test" that when fine also. So I'm kinda lost here.

Thanks,
Homer

This is on a Redhat 9 machine.

the openldap has a server part sldap.conf but also a client configuration ldap.conf
(probably in /etc/openldap/)

I think that maybe you configured the server but not the client,
In the ldap.conf needs to be a BASE and a URI ldap://localhost/ will be sufficient but the
base depends on slapd.conf and the rest of your configuration.
