Launching apps in a virtual desktop

So, I am building these Knoppix based cd's for a project at work. They only make use of 2 applications, The users can't even tell there is a useable desktop. But the way I have it setup is pretty stupid. When they need to switch from app 1 to app 2 they close app 1 and boom, app2 opens. If they need to go back to app 2 they have to reboot the machine.

This works for now but annoys the hell out of me. I launch the apps through .desktop files in $HOME/.kde/autorun or something like that. I do believe I should be able to launch each app in a different virtual desktop under KDE but have know idea how to set this up. Anybody have any ideas?
