launch a program from the menu?

I was attempting to install a tarball type program and noticed it didn't install an icon on the desktop or in the menu for starting up a program. I know what file launches the program manually, but I need to know how to get the program to launch from the menu. So, how does one do this chore of being able to launch from a menu? Thanks.

It depends on which desktop environment you're using: kde, gnome, some other? Each has its own menu editor. Look through the documentation, help files, etc.

Finding the menu editor could be as simple as right clicking on the menu button.
