Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

It's been ages since I worked with LaTex so I don't even remember the name of the editor I used. But here are some links found through Google:
Stackoverflow
Here at LQ
LyX
WikiPedia comparison of LaTex editors.

Hope that helps. Have fun with Linux.

Kind regards,

Eric

I use Kile on Fedora Core 14, and it's very good. You can find it on the official web site Kile on Googl and yop !!

Texmaker is also good. You could also try to use Emacs with AucTex.

I am using both Emacs and Kile (old version using qt3). Emacs has some peculiarities about editing - so if you are new to Emacs it may be an obstacle to use - but maybe it is a good opportunity to learn Emacs. Kile is definitely full-featured tex-editor with key-words completion, an environment completion - the closing \end adds automatically, one-click compilation, editing several documents in tabbed windows, and many, many others, there are shortcuts for tex documentation, if you have already Tex installed then Kile offers a wizard for an environment settings.

I would recommend LyX from www.lyx.org. It is more than an editor, more a complete development system, which allows you to type in your text and view it at any time as PS or PDF (even HTML in the current versions, though that is a bit buggy). Most text is viewable on screen, including mathematical text, Greek, script, superscript, subscript, etc. You can enter, import or export pure Latex, but generally you use drop down menus for formatting what are called "paragraphs". For example, if you set the current paragraph to be Title, then it will be centred in the appropriate script and will be stored as a Latex title. If you set it to Theorem, it will produce "Theorem x.y" (or whatever your indexing method is) and set the rest of the paragraph in italic.

Inserting labels, citations and cross-references is also menu driven. What I find particularly nice is that you can attach a Bibtex database and look up your references directly. To insert a citation you go to the relevant menu, a box opens with all the database references in the right pane, you simply transfer the ones you want to the left pane and it does all the hard work for you.

There is also compendious (and very good) documentation included.

I'm using vim for all my LaTeX work. There is a "latexsuite" available http://vim-latex.sourceforge.net/ for vim.

TeXworks might be worth a look. It is included in the Mac and Windows versions of TeXLive as provided at http://www.tug.org/texlive/ but for reasons I've never determined it's not included in the Linux version.

Do you use the KDE 3 or KDE 4 beta version?

I don't actually 'do' TeX myself but I manage machines for people who do. I currently have the KDE 3 version of Kile and was intending to deployed the KDE 4 version when it came out of beta. Except several years on and it still hasn't left beta. I'm curious as to it's usability compared to the KDE 3 version.
