My laptop's been muted since I reinstalled Debian 8.

Can anyone succor me? This Lenovo's aural innards consist of an AMD/ATI IEC958, and I don't know how to capably wrangle modules.

just to clarify:

this is a complete, full install of debian 8, a.k.a jessie? not a dist-upgrade or some such?
sound has worked before? also on debian 8, or what else?
do other applications play sound? browser? system sounds? other media (also video) players?
what desktop environment? does it use pulseaudio, or alsa only?

Yes, I reinstalled from netinst via CD-R.

Audio has always been fully functional on Win10 (ugh), FreeBSD and Debian 8. My prevenient installation functioned without incident for two years.

No, not AlsaPlayer, VLC, Nicotine, Alarm Clock, Audacity, Pidgin, wavbreaker, WaveSurfer, OpenShot or any video games. Video and audio accessed by my browser are all silent. Upon launch, amSynth (configured for output by dint of ALSA) proclaims:

In lieu of a desktop environment, I use IceWM, and only with ALSA.

you have two audio devices.
you probably just need to tell alsa to use the other one (you can try it with alsamixer, and if that works make it the default), or plug the speaker cable into a different plug.

I've only a single headphone jack, and insertion of a plug doesn't remediate this...

Have you installed pavucontrol, the Pulse Audio Mixer. It give you much more granular control than most volume control applications. It's in the repos.

It's nice, but is a Qt variant anywhere available? GTK+ 3 is revolting.

Don't know, but I run it only when doing a deep dive into the audio settings, so I'm more concerned about functionality.
