Laptop hangs if lid is closed, or screensaver starts

Okay, so i have several issues today. My Mint computer, same one with the partition issue, practically freezes when i close the lid. I will have rythymbox running, and close the lid, because this laptop has nice stereo speakers on the outside, and i use it as a jukebox. Anyways, when i open the lid, OR try to wake it up from screensaver mode, i am met with a full screen command prompt with no text, only the blinking cursor. The music and such keeps playing without lag, or skipping, and the hard drive light does not blink. It will only respond to CTRL ALT DELETE, whereupon it kills all processes, and restarts. Is there some thing that can fix this?
OS: linux mint 10 GNOME
Machine: Toshiba Satellite A25 S207.
It is sitting next to me, so i can check and recheck at will.

are you able to access any of the terminals? ie: ctrl+alt+F# were # is 1 - 7 depending on how Mint handles its gui. most distros put the gui on F7, but i know of a few that put it on F1.

If not, what about ssh into the box to see if it is still responding on any level other then playing your music?

also hit the Mint forums, this is most likely a common issue with Mint and laptops.

The Fkeys are not responding, possibly due to the preset Toshiba options on the F keys, such as change monitors, brightness etc, so, no go on Ctrl alt F1-7.
Oh, and trying to type on the empty prompt does nothing, it will not display my text, or respond when i press enter.
