LaCie LightScribe Labeler: Can you enter text?

Greetings,

Has anyone been able to use LaCie's LightScribe Labeler? I installed it long ago, but have never been able to use it. As far as I can see from the manual, there is no way to input text to print on the disc, either from the GUI or the command line. Am I missing something here? I noticed a dialog to import images; maybe I am supposed to create an image with text in another app, and import it? Is there a way to format disc labels in OpenOffice? Searching Synaptic for "disc labeller" doesn't turn anything up.

It does see my LightScribe drive:
Code:

pad@Studio909:~$ 4L-cli enumerate
Using /etc/lightscribe.rc
Drive path: /dev/hdb
Usable: 1
Full name: HP      - DVD Writer 840d  - HPD3
Model: DVD Writer 840d
Manufacturer: HP
Capabilities: monochrome
Drive inner radius: 21700
Drive outer radius: 58700

Luckily the LightScribe drive itself didn't cost any more than other drives with the same specs. But it would be cool if I could actually use the LightScribe capability. Otherwise I might as well remove the app and its launcher to make more room on my panel. The expensive LightScribe discs will then get illegible Sharpie scrawls, like all the rest.

Here is an article about Lightscribe: what kernel and software is required. It also mentions writing text. You may be missing the fundamental software which must be installed before the LaCie software.
