Lab Monitoring Software

I'm setting up a Linux lab at my university that will consist of about 20 workstations. The lab this will be replacing is an old Windows lab with a hardware device that lets the lab monitor or professor monitor what each student is doing at each workstation, presenting all of the workstations at once in a tiled fashion on the master workstation's screen, with the ability to zoom in on or isolate any of the screens.

Is there any way to do this on the software end in Linux. Perhaps a VNC-related solution?

I think you could probably get rdesktop to do this if you really knew what you were doing. Brace yourself for a steep learning curve!
