kwrite cursor problem

I'm stumped. I was editing a document in kwrite and, all of the sudden, my cursor changed from the small pipe to a block cursor. Kwrite will no longer let me insert text between words. I used to be able to just insert a word and it would just push the text to the right down but now it just overwrites whatever is there. I've checked the manual, googled, and everything else that I can think of. I went in and changed 'every' setting to see if I could figure out what did this and unfortunately nothing helps. Would anyone have an idea of what exactly I did to make kwrite act like this? Thank you in advance for your help.

press the "Insert" key on your keyboard. it's usually located around the top-right of your keyboard.
