You probably don t have a compiler. I'm not sure for the best way to obtain one for your distribution. Search or read the documentation. Also *.gz and *.bz2 are extensions for different compression formats like *.rar and *.zip. So the files will have the same contents compressed with different utilities.

You have downloaded the source for Kopete. This is a combination of a text files which are not a program. To make from this files the program you must compile them, using a compiler. What you need here is the GNU C compiler. To solve your problem you must either install the compiler, or download a package with an already-compiled Kopete. Try a google search for GCC or for precompiled Kopete.
