the easiest way to fix this,,, install gaim instead. it has support for msn, icq, aim, irc and the rest... but if u have your heart set on kopete msg back

for a long time, but you just have to look for the files you need, download the rpms and install them first, after that try to install kopete again
Thanks for the suggestions, cadj and linksocc. In fact I managed to figure out the installation of kopete not long after my first post so it's running fine and my teenage daughter (who had been pestering me to install MSN Messenger under Windo$e) is delighted with it. She thinks Linux is wonderful
I'll maybe have a look at gaim too, but kopete looks pretty slick now that it's running.
I should have posted back to say I'd got things working - sorry.
linksocc - using KDE, yes. It was the default WM with my MDK 9.1, not a problem with a reasonably powerful machine. I tried a couple of the other WMs (Blackbox, Ice) that also ship with MDK but they were a bit too minimalist for me.
