Kopete connection problem (MSN messenger in Windows work)

Just to help people getting into the type of problem I have:

Kopete version 0.9.0 will not connect to MSN, I do know this is because I'm behind the mother of all firewalls. BUT in Windows, MSN messenger can connect. Therefore I know that there is one port that will get me trough to MSN with Kopete. So what can help me is:

Telling me how to scan wich ports are open out from my computer out to the web. Or telling me how to monitor what ports are used in Windows when connecting to MSN.

I have tried port 80 and 8080, they won't connect Kopete to msn.

Please help.

MSN by default uses 1863..but in the virus like operation of M$ it uses 80 if 1863 is blocked...

In windows, when you connect on MSN open the command prompt and run netstat. Look for the line with messenger.hotmail.com...or some related MSN or hotmail site. The port number should be next to it.

If trying what the other person has suggested, try downloading and using gAIM. Its quite similar and I haven't had a problem using it with MSN...

I forgot to mention: This not only happen to Kopete on this CAM, it happens to all other clients than MSN Messenger, when they try to connect to MSN. (gAIM, Trillian, etc). I haven't had the time to use netstat to figure out the used ports, but I suspect port 80. Kopete gives me error 140, 14 or something, I do not remember the exact number, will provide it to you this afternoon. gAIM gives me "Wrong password" or something similar error.

I have also been having problems with Kopete 0.7.1 for about 1 week now. I'm getting all sorts of errors, from timing out, connection refused to wrong passwords. I'm currently configuring Kopete 0.9.0 and QT 3.2.2 for install (not sure if might be part of the problem or not).

A few friends of mine on IRC are also complaining of connection failures. They are using Trillian/gAIM-win32 and Windows/MSN Messenger. A friend in New Jersey, and another in Greece have been reporting intermittent connection problems over the last few days. When I AM able to connect (rarely, maybe for 1-2 hours per day), there are very few of my contacts online (most are on 24/7), which tells me they might have been kicked offline also. I feel the problem is on Micro$oft's end (what else is new). I wasn't able to get to the Messenger home page, OR ping the servers today (but the DNS did resolve an IP address). I have never tried to ping these servers, so I'm not sure if their firewall drops ICMP packets or not, but it just timed out for me. The fact that http://messenger.msn.com yielded an error (not a 404) tells me its probably internal problems on micro$oft's end.

I doubt my upgrade to Kopete 0.9.0 will fix anything, but thought I'd share that this seems to be (at least in part) an issue that we have no control over.

Anyone else having this problem too??

Cheers!

The server was really unstable today. Somebody on another forum found that m$ put a message somewhere that the servers were having trouble. Today neither I or my family who use windows could logon to MSN
