Kontact/Kmail not keeping SMTP settings

I'm having trouble with my outbox on my machine. I have a Toshiba 7140CT laptop with Mandrake 10.1 installed.

Every time I try to send an email, I receive an error. The only thing that corrects it is going into "Configure Kmail" under the security tab and asking it to "Check What the Server Supports." Even if I don't change a thing - just ask it to check, I click OK and it works OK for that email. Next email it's back to it's squirrly self.

Any help?
Thanks!

Shot in the dark: did your permissions settings in your ~/.kde directory get munged up? This might prevent kmail from writing its settings permanently...

Doubtful, I haven't touched them. How do I check and what do I look for?

Well, like I said, shot in the dark. If you haven't touched them then it is indeed doubtful this is your problem.

To be sure, a simple:
Code:
$ chown -R <your username> ~/.kde
...will make sure all the files are owned by you.

Maybe time to search bugs.kde.org? Also, it is not out of the realm of possibility that this is a problem on the server side.

If I was to troubleshoot this further, I would try using a different mailer (ie: mutt, thunderbird etc) and see if they can connect fine. Narrow down the problem as much as possible.
