kontact/kmail

Hello
I get the following message when trying to open kontact or kmail.
----
KMail could not create folder '$HOME/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail'; please make sure that you can view and modify the content of the folder '/home/john'.
-----
I removed and deleted kmail folder. I still get same message after reinstall. Would appreciate help on what to do next.
John

It sounds like this directory hasn't got the correct permissions the program needs.

In BASH, check out the permissions on the directory. You (user) should have delete/modify/add access to this directory. You should also check out any subdirectories as well.

Did you upgrade to kde 3.4 at some point?

I had the same problem running kmail from kde 3.3 after kde was updated to 3.4 in another PC which shares the directory, automatically updating the settings that 3.3 no longer parses correctly.

The only solution was to delete all settings and start over (rm $HOME/.kde/config/kmailrc). You don't have to delete any mails, just re-configure your email accounts.
