konqueror opens new window

Konqueror would open from desktop icon but not from icon within konqueror.
"You have tried to open file inode-directory but Konqueror cant open this type of file."
I deleted the file association from the control panel , then right clicked ,went to properties and reassigned konqueror to open folders. Now every time i open a folder from within konqueror it opens in a new window. I'm using FC2 with konqueror 3.2.2-4. Also , this happens regaurdless of the settings in konqueror.

Konqueror >Settings>Configure Konqueror > Behaviour.
Click open in new Windows 'Apply'

Then unclick Open in New Windows 'Apply'

Ive tried that but doesnt work. Neither does directly editing konquerorrc .It's already is set to open in same window. Also , just prior to tis occurring I was tinkering with services . Is it possible that I could have disabled a service which is neccessary. Also if I right click and "open in new tab" it opens in new tab and in new window but the new tab shows no folders or files : the new window does.
