konqueror and samba

Ok, when I access a samba share on windows, I assume it mounts it, but it does it in the background. With this I am able to stream files off the share, but not in konqueror.

This is mostly a question about samba, but in linux, do you have to mount the share in order to access files off of it? Then what does konqueror do when you access the share through its network browser?

When I try to play a video off a samba share, it has to copy to a tmp directory - any way to solve this in konqueror? (i.e, a setting somewhere I missed)
