knoppix help


I need to find a version of knoppix that will work on i386 arch, I have one thats i486 arch, I have a ftp site to where I can dl a verison of it. But I dunno which one to get. Does anyone know a version I can dl for it, or maybe another LiveCD I can run on 1386 arch? Thanks ahead of time...

There are lots. Damn Small Linux should run on your hardware pretty easily. And it's only 50MB total.

You might also try MepisLite.

For the record: i386 architecture means you want to run it on a 386? I know Linux works well on older machines, but this may be pushing it for a LiveCD. Most LiveCDs require more RAM than any 386 has/had.

for my laptop

Well I want to run a livecd for my laptop that runs xp (my desktop is fried), so ram isn't to much of a issue for me, I am currently running 512mb or ram.

Ok... Then why do you need i386 instead of i486?

Your laptop is should be a 686 if it was made in 2004 (386 processors I believe were the early pentiums, even my Celeron 400MHz is a 586). But any x86 should work for you...

my laptop

My laptop is a hp pavillion dv1000, it has a centrino 1.6 gigahertz cpu, dunno if that means anything.

Yeah, any 4.0-EN image should work for you from Knoppix.org...

FYI: No pentiums should register as a 486. The 486 predated the pentium. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_80486

I have burned a knoppix 4.0 and I am going to download 4.0.2, to see if that will work. Thanks for everyones help, I will be back to let anyone know if it worked for me or not.
