KMail fails to send attachments

I've recently noticed that kmail (1.6.2 on kde 3.2.3) is no longer able to send non-text attachments (bz2, jpg, and doc fail where a txt works!). I know this worked a couple of weeks ago and is now non-fiunctional. Any ideas on how to debug this? I've google around and tried things like deleting ./.Mail/.outbox.index* but this does not seem to help. In addition, some data appears to be sent but kmail never moves the messages from outbox to sent and they never actually arrive at the sender either. I can receive attachments and save them off as well. I heard a suggestion of deleting my ~/.kde but was hoping to avoid this!

Thanks!

Maybe not just kmail

Ok, some more detail...

I upgraded my Slackware 10.0 KDE to 3.3.1 (from 3.2.3 I think) with kmail 1.7.1 (from 1.6.2). Still no attachments that are not text files are sent. Even small *.bz2 (12 kb) won't send. Tried to set up mozilla mail and the same thing! Is there something on a lower level to look for? I grepped around in /var/log/maillog (think that's the file) and didn't really notice anything but not real sure what I should be looking for.

I tried all the 'weird' fixes in kmail of removing and restoring identiy, using sendmail as default and then back to stmp, using full email address in name field...no joy. I even deleted all the index files in ~/.Mail to force kmail to regenerate them.

Thanks!
