Kmail duplicate messages when marking them as "Read"

I'm running Kmail as a client against a Courier IMAP server. In recent days I've been getting an odd dialog box pop up when I select several (via Ctrl-click) messages to mark them as "Read". Generally, this is when I'm selecting several messages that are definitely spam and I just want to marked them as "read" and I want to drag them to the SPAM folder to get them out of my Inbox ASAP. (Aside: Those messages are deleted periodically after I've extracted the IP addresses and decided whether to add them to a local blacklist that feeds the firewall rules.) Once I have several messages selected, I'll mark them as read, and then, a couple of seconds later, I'll get the dialog box telling me that there is a duplicate message and which one should be kept (left, right, both). The duplicate message warnings are not always displayed but it is fairly frequent; maybe half the time. There's only ever a single dialog box pop up -- i.e., if I have N messages selected, I do not get N pop ups; only one. I also, occasionally, get the duplicate message dialog pop up after I've right-clicked on a message and tried to mark it as "Read". Funny thing is that I've never noticed that there's an actual duplicate message either when it's a single message or when it's a selected group of emails.

Any idea why I would be getting duplicate messages while marking them "Read"? Kmail bug, maybe?
