Kino, OSS and TOSS

Some time ago, I mailed to say that when I tried to play back captured video in Kino, it skipped through quickly, without any sound. At the time I was using Mandrake 9.1

I switched to Gentoo, still with the same mobo (Asus A7N266VM) and suddenly everything was fine!

Unfortunately the mobo then decided to die on me, so I had to press a PC-Chips M810LMR into use. I had just bought a Geforce 4 MX440 card to take over video duties from the on-board graphics on the Asus, so it went straight into the PC-Chips and I didn't even need to change the video driver. However, I did have to change the sound and ethernet drivers. They worked fine, really happy, and perversely, the sound quality was much improved and internet connection far more stable. Only the raw processing speed of the PC-Chips with its slightly slower processor and SDRAM instead of DDR provided any reason not to think I had a better setup.

Then I tried kino. Arrgh! NO SOUND. Checking KDE Control Centre, I found that ARTS is using "Threaded Open Sound System" as opposed to "Open Sound System". The KINO help file says it can only use OSS. It does not mention TOSS.

So my question is: How can I get Kino to make a sound with this type of setup? I can get sound playback in Cinelerra but I am still finding it a bit complex and would rather use kino for simpler tasks.
