kino gives "invalid file specified" when i try to open an *.mpg file

Hey, I'm trying to edit some video and Kino seems to be the only available editor in my apt repos. Thats fine, except my Sony camera takes video clips (with audio) and stores them as *.mpg files. Normal, right? But if I try to open one in Kino, it gives an error popup:
"Invalid File Specified"

These should be fine files, I've edited them before with some windows program as well as with MainActor here in linux, and the files open in any type of viewer just fine.

I've gone into articles describing the merits of Kino, read over their web page, and installed all that I can think of through Synaptic, but still no luck.

Anyone have ideas?

Kino only handles dv unfortunately.
There are not that many video-editors around, I think kdenlive could work or try avidemux. Lives is another one, never used it.
They should be available for Mepis - I have Mepis but upgraded to Debian etch.
I found that 'marillat' is a good repo for multimedia-thingies:
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ etch main
