killed artsd, now what?

I have removed artsd from starting at boot since it interferred with Mplayer AND xine, but now I dont have any wav's from various applications. Most importantly, LICQ. I changed the config from 'soundwrapper play' to 'kaboodle play' and it works, but it has to launch kaboodle each and every time. Not only does that cause a delay, but when kaboodle launches it takes away what ever cursor I might be working with (in the middle of typing ALWAYS!!!) so I have to click and re-type the last sentence or so, lol.

Anyone know a better way to get around this problem than kaboodle?

change the command to just
play

soundwrapper play
makes the output of play go through arts which cannot happen if you're not running arts.
Check in the menus how various programs are started. They probably get started with
soundwrapper something

remove the soundwrapper and you should get sound out of them.
