Keyboard shorcuts - adding a command?

I'm running ubuntu 6.06 (w/ Gnome) and was wondering how I could attach a command to a keyboard shortcut. I discovered the Keyboard Shortcuts part in the Preferences, and I set a lot of my audio shortcuts and such, but I was wondering how I Could set my "Messenger" key to open GAIM. Thanks.

You'll have to do a bit more rooting around to find this. Open a terminal and type the command "xev". A window will appear with a box in it. Place your mouse in the box and press the messenger key. When you do, some text will appear in the terminal. Somewhere within the most recent block, you'll see something like this (keysym 0x20, space). This is the output for a spacebar. Yours will be of the format (keysym <a hex number>, <prolly the word nosymbol>). You need to write these down on paper, because doing anything on the computer will create a flood of output in the terminal. Then close down that xev window, and type into the terminal

xmodmap -e "keycode <The next F-key higher than your keyboard goes> = <that hex number>"

If your keyboard goes to F12, then have that above be "F13", etc. Hopefully, now gnome will recognize the key and call it F13 (or whatever F-key).

Hey I couldn't find the keysym in the output. Here's what it said
Code:
ButtonPress event, serial 29, synthetic NO, window 0x3c00001,
    root 0x64, subw 0x0, time 1849180361, (168,177), root:(173,249),
    state 0x10, button 1, same_screen YES

ButtonRelease event, serial 29, synthetic NO, window 0x3c00001,
    root 0x64, subw 0x0, time 1849180501, (168,177), root:(173,249),
    state 0x110, button 1, same_screen YES

hrm, on my xev, the output is right where yours says button 1. I'm not sure what to do here. Sorry, hopefully someone else can pop in with the answer.
