kernel upgrade woes

here's the thing; i downloaded, configured and compiled 2.4.18-then mv'd bzImage to vmlinuz after vmlinuz to vmlinuz.old,etc.,etc. i reboot and up comes 2.2.19, which was my original setup. look in / and there are vmlinuz and vmlinuz.old(with vmlinuz looking right for 2.4 by its size)-go to /boot and there are System.map and System.map.old(again checking out). look at lilo.conf and it's saying image = /vmlinuz, boot = /dev/hda3 as well as a line for image = /vmlinuz.old(which i had added and then run /sbin/lilo). after another reboot lilo.conf then no longer had the /vmlinuz.old line, but vmlinuz was the 2.4 image yet i was booting 2.2.19- figured i better ask advice as i may be getting off base in my ignorance here- thanx for any help.

After having changed lilo.conf, have you rerun lilo?
<EDIT>
Sorry, didn't see that you have run lilo - no idea what's happening - sorry

I'm sure the problem is related to your lilo.conf file. Posting it might be helpful
