kernel upgrade problem

Hi,

I have downloaded the latest version of the kernel from redhat ( 2.4.20-20.8 ) and run the command rpm -ivh rpmpackagename

but the process seems to be hang.It works fine for other linux server.

I remembered that last time I install the kernel 2.4.21 using the source code compilation rather than using the rpm and eventually it crash up the server.I boot up the server and choose back the old kernel to boot.Is there something to do with this?How can I fix it?

how long do you wait? cause its possibly its just not long enough...or maybe your just have the "redhat issue" with rpm packages which is solved by typing:
rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db.*
as root...and then trying to install the rpm again...but in any case i will post the link to the step by step i posted on LQ.org that has a complete success rate, so if you wanted to do it yourself then look at this

well..it is still running when before I reply this message 5 minutes ago.But I manage to update successfully by running the above command as root.
