Kernel update freezes laptop
 

hope I'm not crossposting here....

I have been attempting to upgrade the kernel on my ASUSTEK L3800 laptop, every time I change the settings, i.e getting wireless going, setting up firewire etc every thing seems to go ok until I reboot. then the system hangs at line: INET=version 2.84
(just before redhat interactive setup init line or something like that)

the only way I can get it up and running again so far is by doing a complete reinstall, as I don't know how to restore original configuration (which I presume can be done somehow....)

I am using grub bootloader and RH 7.3

I think the chipset is an i845, intel 1.7 GHZ processor, 512mb DDR SDRAM.

if there is any other info that you may want that may be relevent to my problem please let me know.

Have done a fair bit of searchin on RH site, but have not found any thing usefull as yet.

wireless actually works ok as is, just want to update to more current drivers, the card is an Enerasys roamabout (orinocco?), but can't seem to compile the drivers (RH reports errors, have read about this problem before on this site, none of the workarounds seem to fix compile problems..)

Kernel updating freezing system
 

I had a working 1GHz Gateway Athlon running RH7.3. I tried to upgrade that to RH &.0 but experienced the same lockups you described on your laptop. I formatted the drive and reinstalled 7.3 and all was well until the last time I ran up2date. The kernel (don't remember what version) in that update now causes the system to lock up at that point as well. Fortunately I had an older boot disk and was able to get on the system that way. Someone suggesed I compile the kernel myself. I tried but the resulting kernel was too large for a boot diskette. I guess I'm stuck at that kernel until Red Hat fixes this problem.

I thought it maybe specific to the hardware I was running but maybe it's not!

anybody else experience this problem?

I'm guessing it maybe still hardware related tho, although I doubt an athlon would be running much in the way of intel stuff on the motherboard....
