kernel stops as 'freeing unused kernel memory'
I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 with SuSE 7.2. Originally it had kernel 2.4.10, and I am trying to upgrade to 2.4.20. I tried to copy the configuration as closely as possible from my old kernel (also compiled from source). It builds fine and boots, but it stops at 'Freeing unused kernel memory: 204k' and just sits there. A believe this is the point where it should start going into the init scripts. Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Thanks, Ben |
Why are you trying to upgrade? Is there an RPM available for you?

There's ALOT that can go wrong if you select the wrong kernel options, so it's impossible to say exactly what went wrong just like that (I'd need at least your complete /usr/src/linux/.config ) .....
Kernel configuration is something that almost never works the first time you do it, myself I needed 3 tries |
I'm not really sure what was causing it, but I fixed it now, just messing around with the settings. Thanks guys.
