kernel question

I am currently compiling a system with the 2.6.9 kernel. I saw that there was a patch also which I downloaded.

My question is, once my compile of 2.6.9 finishes, what are the steps to apply the patch from kernel.org. I didn't see any instructions on their site, but I've missed things that were right in front of me before.

Thanks for your help.

You should apply the patch before you compile the kernel.
look at this link for more information on patching a kernel.

The patch files are used to upgrade from the previous version of the Linux source. If you had a Linux source tree of version 2.6.8.1 you could use the patch-2.6.9 file to upgrade the source to 2.6.9 without downloading the entire tarball. To upgrade over several versions you will need to apply all patches inbetween the two versions, and in the right sequence (upgrading from a 2.6.5 source tree to 2.6.9 would mean using the 2.6.6, 2.6.7, 2.6.8 and 2.6.9 patches, and in that order)
