Kernel panic when trying to boot to Mandrake 8.2 linux

My friend has a p3 system. i use 3 OS, Mandrake Linux 8.1, Win98,WinXP. He have given a seperate partition to linux.

When i select linux and hit enter in boot options it displays a message "Kernel Panic". What does this mean and how to rectify it. I am using LILO.

hi
boot from ur rescue CD
post ur lilo.conf
most probably u have entry wrong there
or had made somechanges in ur harddisk,like removed the jumper from it or changed the data chord???

I dont remember changing any jumper settings or doing anything with the hard disk. Could this be a problem of a corrupted file or did i do anything wrong while installation?

what eror mesage xactly u r getting???
generally it happens if it has not ben specified correctly in lilo.conf ,to load which partiton as root
or the partiton ur asking to load is not there
so post the output of the commands below
"fdisk -l" and ur lilo.conf after booting in to rescue mode
