Question Kernel Panic!!! -Not Syncing VFS:Unable to mount root FS on unknown - block (0,0)

I just tried to compile the latest 2.6.16.5 kernel and all I get is the same Error. I have had the problem with all the 2.6.16.X kernel. I compiled my current kernel 2.6.15.1 with no real problems. I am new to configuring kernels but I don't think I left any major options out during my config. The error I get is this:

Kernel Panic-Not Syncing VFS:unable to mount root FS on unknown - block(0,0)

I have AOPEN AX4C Max MB-Intel 875P chipset
One SATA strip array promise controller but linux not installed on that
Fedora installed on IDE harddrive that system boots from
1 Gig Ram DDR400
Nvidia 6600gt vid card
game theater xp snd card
2x cd/dvd rom
floppy

You need to have your filesystem support (ext3 or reiserfs or whatever you use) inside the kernel.
If those are comiled as modules you need to make a RAM disk (initrd) with those modules inside.

Here is something from slackware about initrd:
http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackwa.../README.initrd

And main board support should be embedded into kernel too (otherwise use initrd).

kernel panic fixed!!! but iptable error now

Ok I'm using RAM disk now and that fixed the kernel panic issue, but now I have ip table error. What area of the kernel config option will affect iptables? it is an error in line 3 of iptables. Also can any one tell me about the cryptographic api options. I am happy with SElinux.

Thanks for the help

maybe you just need to load the ip_tables and ip6_tables in one of your startup scipts
