Angry Kernel Panic Error

Greetings to all
I am looking for all of the help I can find.
The issue is with SMP and trustix 2 with the kernel version 2.4.16 and a Compaq Proliant quad 400 xeon server
When trying to boot the computer in SMP mode I receive a kernel panic error that the boot partition cannot be accessed at c0d1p2 48:12 and the system will not go any farther
I have read the articles that refer to disabling the Power-saving features on the BIOS but there is none the article also mentioned APIC another section that is not in the BIOS of this computer I can boot into trustix without SMP and the system will run normally however I cannot take advantage of the multiple processors.

Could someone point me in the proper direction for the answers to what I seek keeping in mind that I am a newbee to the game

Thank You

seems that the smp kernel does not have your drive controller driver
recompile kernel is solution
