This error is pretty straightfoward -- the kernel tried to read a block from /dev/hde and failed to do so. It appears to be trying to mount the root filesystem (with init) from /dev/hde. This seems somewhat unusual. How many drives do you have on your system? If you just have one or two it should be looking at /dev/hda or /dev/hdb. Post some more details on your set up and someone can help more.
