kernel panic after image restore

I have attempted to restore the images of my Linux system and reinstalled the GRUB bootloadr. However, I get the following on my screen when I attemp to boot my Linux.

Partition check
hda: hda1 hda2 < hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8 hda9 hda10
autodetecting RAID arrays
autorun ...
... autorun DONE.
Invalid session number or type of track
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:0a

I've ried restoring the partitons in differnt places but ALL using the original hda8/9/10 partitions which is where they were oiginally.

Can anyone offer some insight please?

After restoring the images in reverse partiton order - last pertition on disc first etc all went OK.
Shows how frustrating it can be and my desperation to even think of doing the not-so-obvious.
Wierd and strange is all I can say about this!!!
