Unhappy Kernel - kde problems

I recently compiled a new kernel (2.4.21) on redhat 9. But whenever i try to run a KDE application (like kmix, kwrite) or KDE itself, it exits with an error message saying:
"Kernel too old for threaded local storage support"

Can anybody help?

Hi,

I'm a linux newbie myself but this problem is well known to me.

The problem is that from version 9, Red Hat has included Native Posix Thread support (NPTL). So for KDE to work, you have to patch the standard kernel source for this.

I have installed kernel 2.4.22 myself and know how to patch it and with what, but I do not know for 2.4.21. I'm sure you can find it on the internet.

Let me know if you still want to know the procedure I followed for 2.4.22.

Please also mention where to get the patches and how to apply the patch.

Hi

Take a look at the thread on linuxquestions.org called 'Kernel 2.4.22 ==> Redhat 9.0'.

The first patch***.bz2 is applied like this (can't remember the full name now):

bzip2 -dc ../path***bz2 | patch -p1 (the patch is thus d=one directory above the source dir)

then apply the secondnptl-2.4.22-ac1-A2 patch like this:

patch -p1 < nptl-2.4.22-ac1-A2 (here the patch is directly in the source dir

Let me know if you cannot find the patches and I'll email them

Good luck!

Norbert (aka coeverin)
