Kernel Fatal Error

I have a server running Linux SUSE 9 and this morning I come in to find the entire thing had locked up. The console as well was no responsive. After rebooting I get this error while it tries to boot the kernel:

"Fatal Error : Controller monitor failedController not started".

Can someone tell me what this means and how I can fix it?

Are your disks in a RAID? Maybe that's the kind of "controller" it's talking about?

Yes they are in a RAID. Please don't tell me the entire thing is hosed.

Can you boot with a "live CD" and mount and access your files? A CD like Knoppix or the Gentoo LiveCD would do.

If something is hosed, it's probably not the disks, or the data on them. You will most likely be able to just put the disks in a new RAID case and get going again.

I'm not quite convinced it's dead yet, though. Make sure you try reseating various connections, power cycling the various equipment, etc, before digging into your wallet.

Thanks

I'm trying to locate our boot disk and will give that a try. I'll also give the server a nice "shake down" to make sure everything is still connected. Will let everyone know tomorrow morning if it's faring any better.
