kernel error installing RedHat Linux ver.9. PLEASE HELP!!!

If someone answers this, you will be my God. I bought Red Hat Linux 9 for $50 and it came with 2 disks and a BIG book that helps you get started. Now, that book would be helpful, but I CAN'T INSTALL IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is so annoying. I've gone to many sites, but I figured out I NEED live help. When I put the cd in, I restart the computer, and it brings me to the install screen. It says "to start install in graphical mode, hit ENTER. Below that it says "to start install in text mode, type linux text and hit ENTER." So I start it in graphical, and I get an error message. This is how it looks:
104k init, 0k highmem)

So that's it. It took me a loooooong time to copy it to paper and then copy it to this, so an answer would be MUCH appreciated. Like I said, if you can tell me how to fix this, you will be my idol, god, or whatever. I REALLY WANT TO GET THIS RUNNING!!!!! Oh one more thing; I have Thiz Linux currently installed as my OS. I don't know if any of this will help you, but I am giving everything I have. And on answers, please try use terms I can understand, and tell me all you know. Thank you,
SesshomaruNick

I'm sorry, I don't mean to whine, but WILL SOMEONE PLEASE REPLY?! I've gone everywhere else and found this and said"if I'm gonna find the answer anywhere, it'll be here with all these helping people." I really don't mean to whine. But I mean come on. Please answer.

If it makes you reply any more, just know that there is a perfectly good RH Linux sitting collecting dust because I can't use it.

Thank you,
SesshomaruNick

I don't know if this will make you happy or sad, but I have the same problem when I try to install on my 486 boxes. I have no answer for you, but I'm google-ing all over. I suggest researching and google-ing as well.

did you try installing in text mode yet?

linuXBOX 01-31-2004 03:35 AM

I did, and i tried mem=16 (or whatever memory you have) as well as noprobe, it makes no difference. It only occurs when I try to install on old 486's (I have 2) From what I've gathered, it's a problem of crappy memory. Not bad memory keep in mind, because I've run memtest on all my machines and had no errors. But these machines have long passed their prime. I'm afraid dos - win98 is all I can give them. However it goes against a statement I once heard about linux. It went something like "...linux is perfect for recycling your old 486!" Implying that linux ran great with leagcy hardware, which doesn't seem to be true...

idle task not syncing

finally, i seem to have found the only other people in the universe with the same problem i have. anybody have any leads yet? i dont see how it can be a hardware issue since im installing redhat9 on a brand-spankin-new machine, never had an OS on it not even formatted. ive tried text mode, noprobe, mem=256m, the whole 9 yards.

I would suggest a swap of better memory, or memory better suited for your system. I gave up on redhat on my 486's and installed slackware. It's working like a charm!

i came to pretty much the same conclusion, only difference is i went with fedora core1 instead of slackware, works beautifully too.
