Kernel crashes when loading Xorg with fglrx
Hi,
Recently I have been trying to install fglrx from the official ATI website ( http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...6&lang=English ) for my freshly re-installed Fedora 11 desktop ( I used to have Fedora 10). Somehow, after I install fglrx and reboot, the kernel seems to crash right after loading everything and before I get to see gdm or anything - just freezes at the full fedora logo. I try ctrl-alt-backspace ( Yes, I did activate it on Fedora 11 ), I try switching tty, and nothing happened. To fix this I reboot to init 3 and uninstall the driver. Then when I go back to the gui ( Without fglrx installed ) a notification tells me that the kernel has failed / crashed, and sent a report for debugging. I tried the latest driver from ATI. I recently updated the kernel, same results with updated kernel. fglrx used to work fine on Fedora 10. Downgrading the kernel as a last resort, how can I make fglrx work and what seems to be stopping it? My system specifications: OS: Fedora 11 i586, latest public/stable build Kernel: Same results in both 2.6.29.4 and currently 2.6.29.5 Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 4850 HD Here is the kernel crash report: Quote:
Thanks in advance! |
Oh and also, I tried installing fglrx but did not enable it in xorg.conf ( use default radeon driver as default ). Same results...

which display driver u are using???
|
Currently, "radeon"

Ok, just found out about Xorg.log, it's pretty long but here is the output of "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old" which seems to be the one loading the fglrx driver.
It is pretty long, so i cut out the pieces that may be unnecessary: Quote:

Please tell me know if there are any other logs or more of the xorg.log i should post.
|
Any ideas?

Okay, I tried doing the same with an older version of the ATI driver ( 9.5 ), rebooted. Instead of hanging at the completed Fedora logo, parts of the screen flickered a bit and it went black - however the monitor did get the signal. I've been searching everywhere on the internet and tried many different methods with no success. If anybody could help, it would be really appreciated :)

i advise u pls upgrade the kernel it will resolve the problem.
Pls try this and share the logs if any error comes that will help us to figure out the problem more closely. |
Thanks for your reply.
As I said, I am at the latest kernel, but I think you are telling me to downgrade. Doing so. Can you please tell me what other logs I should post? |
I don't use Fedora, don't have ATI Card but have you seen this page.
We could see relevant lines from var/log/messages if above link isn't helpful to you. |
Yup, I've been there. However, the Fedora 11 / Rpmfusion repositories didn't have fglrx, thus having me go to the ati site for it. :(
I did not see anything that could be relevant in /var/log/messages, however I will attempt to recreate the situation and see if the log/messages will have anything new. Quote:

I've been searching a little,it looks like there are some problems here.Tell me,did you install the driver successfully and how did you install it? Also,have you tried to make the entry in Xorg look like this;
Code:
|
I downloaded the drivers from the official ati website http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...6&lang=English
It corresponds with my video card model. I installed it by running the .sh file: Quote:
It then asks me if I want a custom or automatic installation. If you choose custom it will give you a choice of what parts of the driver you want to install: Kernel Module Opengl Driver ATI Catalyst program If you choose automatic, then it installs everything. Driver was installed successfully, although there is a small error with DKMS after I tried to install without anything but modules. After some research I concluded that it shouldn't mess anything up. This is what occurred in the terminal during installation: Quote:

And about the xorg,
I did try to configure it to run without fglrx, with no success However I did not try your configuration yet. |
