Kernel Compile with PIII Coppermine Processor?
 

I am trying to compile my kernel with support for the PIII that is in my laptop. When I compile with processor option PIII/Celron/Coppermine or PII/Celron, the kernel will not boot. After lilo prompt I get a quick flash of uncompressing kernel on the screen and then the system reboots in an endless cycle. I have to select my old kernel from lilo to get the system back up. Now, I can make mrproper, go into the configuration and change only the processor type to the generic 586,686, etc option, recompile, and everything works fine, but I feel like the kernel is not being optimized for my processor. I also noticed an option for Toshiba Laptop support (which I think is for power management/some bios features), I have tried compiling it in as well, but still have the same problems. Does anyone know why other processor options will not work on a Toshiba 1755 Laptop?

Well, since the penguin seems to have everyones tongue, I installed a vanilla kernel for 2.4.23 and compiled it with PIII/Coppermine arch. It worked with the exception of no support for supermount (which is crap anyways, that was one of the first things I changed about my Mandrake Distro). So here is the question. What changes are in the Mandrake kernel vs. the Vanilla Kernel? (with the exception of supermount, of course). I also noticed some 3rd party complie options were missing when I run xconfig, but I never used them anyways.

I like Mandrake, but I am also quite comfortable editing script files. I did start out with Caldera 1.3. I lost a lot of my hair in those early days. I had to install a new X server just to get KDE up and running. I like the configuration tools in Mandrake, because most of the time they get the job done and save time, and if I don't like what I see, I can just go in and change things.

I am not opposed to a new distro though, Gentoo looks very promising. I like the portage feature. The RPM manager seems to be good at installing new software, but if I want to upgrade say Gimp, it wants to uninstall alot of stuff that I don't just to upgrade. Does anyone know of an easier way to install packages in Mandrake besides RPM?

Also, are other distros really that much faster than Mandrake? I use prelinking in Mandrake, I have a Toshiba with a PIII Coppermine with 192 MB of RAM. OpenOffice opens the 1st time in about 17 seconds, 5 seconds on the second time. Is that about average? I have looked at and considered installing Slack as well. I would if I thought it would make a BIG difference in performance.

I have tried other WM such as FluxBox, ICE, Enlightenment, etc., but I like KDE and will probably stick with it. Does anyone have any suggestions for speed improvements?
