kernel compile

can someone please take the time, about 10 to 25 minutes to help me with compiling my kernel ? i have tried many websites, kernelnewbies.org, etc..., and i can never compile a kernel to fit my hardware, and whenwver i do, it never reads my DVD/CDrw drive, and it runs slow. i would like for someone to AOL IM with me so i can talk person to person with my questions. i tried to compile kernel 2.5.30 and it had error 2. i tried kernel 2.4.0, and it had error 2. i need help badly.

my AOL IM is
DAChristen29

it would also be nice to have someone configure the kernel for me, and all i will do is provide the person with my hardware specs, and they will configure it, and senc me the configuration file. i would be very very grateful for this. i am only 15 years old and a linux newbie, so i dont have much time on my hands. please help.

thanks in advance

Kernel series 2.5.xx is the development series and should only be used by experienced users for testing or development, kernel series 2.4.xx is the current stable series and the latest version is 2.4.20, kernel-2.4.0 was the first in the 2.4.xx series and you should stay well away from it. Have a good read of the Kernel-HOWTO for information on building custom kernels, then post back here with some more specific questions.
