Unhappy Kernel compile

Hi all i am only a n00b. I want to get the Ati drivers to work on my comp, from what i've read the first step to get them to work is to compile the kernel with the right options enabled/disabled but every time i compile the kernel never boots, it get up to this message (i wrote it down as it wont get as far as a terminal) (kernel 2.6.9, Mdk10.0)

ide0: bm-dma at 0xf000-0xf0007, bios settings: hda:dma hdb:dma
ide1: bm-dma at 0xf008-0xf00f, bios settings :hdc:dma hdd:dma

and it stops there every time.
I know i am doing somthing wrong but i have no idea what it is any help would be greatly apreciated

2600 Athlon
512Mb DDR
9.1 gig w/d
80.0 gig s/g

What are your IDE/ATA/SCSI configuration options? Are you using ATA hard-disks or SCSI?

You need to compile in (not just as a module) drivers for everything you need to mount your hard-disk.

A very simple workaround with kernel 2.6 is to run “make cloneconfig” in the root of the kernel source tree. This will set the kernel up to match the settings you're currently running. Compile that, see if it works, then start disabling the options that you don't need.

Hope that helps,
