kernel compilation problems in vmware

Hello,
This is my first message in this forum. So excuse me for the eventual errors.

I have a VMware workstation with linux installed on it. this is a Redhat with a 2.4.x kernel. I am trying to compile and install a new kernel in order to have a dual boot into this VMWare linux. The kernel I try to compile is the 2.4.9.

make menuconfig, make dep and make clean work fine.
But make bzImage causes a lot of errors. I tried to change some parameters when I do make menuconfig, but that does not change anything.
For people who are interested into this message, I would like to say that I use the required SCSI modules.
Can anyone help me ?
Thanks.
