Kernel Compilation Problems

Will I be able to load an alternate kernel config file designed for version 2.4.22 if I decide to compile 2.6.4? Because it seems like when I compile the kernel, It causes me to lose sound because modprobe complains of no such device when I reinstall and load my ALSA sound card kernel module.

Also, is it recommended to upgrade from 2.4.22 to 2.6.4?

I use 2.6.4 and haven't had any problems with my sound. All I can say is that you should make sure you have the correct module and are using ALSA sound. Well, what type of sound card is it? Maybe I can help more if you tell me.

Does your kernel have native support for it?

What do you mean by "loose sound" ? Do you mean that when you boot into the other re-compiled kernel , you are unable to hear the sound ? Does your kernel version have support for your sound-card ?

You have to go through all menuconfig options becuase you can't use the old config file wiht 2.6.X.
try to do select the proper modules including ASLA for you sound card.
kernel do not have buildin support for any sound card, you have to select the proper module

What I meant by built-in support was this only , i.e. the proper module has to be loaded , but I guess I should have been clearer in my post . For Kernel 2.6.x , the compilation process has been considerably improved , and has lesser "steps" for the the user to perform . Steps are :

1. make menuconfig and select the proper module .
2. make etc
3. copy the image in /boot, and make appropriate entry in your grub.conf etc

In case you face problems with these steps , post a reply to my post .

Maybe a stupid question, but who knows:

did you generate /etc/modprobe.conf ?

The kernel 2.6 does not use the /etc/modules.conf anymore.
