If I'm right, there was a different option for enabling MMX, but it's been some time since I last time compiled a kernel. Take a look around, and read the "helps".
I looked, but the proc type was all I found. Not much in the helps, though. What I did find: It looks like the P-4 option implements MMX instructions as well; the MMX option is there for the original proccessors with MMX capabilities.
