kernel and root file system

Hi all,
Can anybody explain the sequence of operations from loading the kernel to mounting the ramdisk and file system. I want to know the relationship between kernel and file system.

Thanks

I find IBM to have good documentation about Linux; http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/li...y/l-linuxboot/

And File system from Wikipedia;
Quote:
...is a means to organize data expected to be retained after a program terminates by providing procedures to store, retrieve and update data, as well as manage the available space on the device(s) which contain it.
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system

That should get you started.
