kernel and app compatible?

I am currently running the latest vanilla kernel with no problem. I would like to try kernel 2.6 but compiling it and maybe making another grub boot selection to boot it...what I want to know is, would my existent software (X, gcc, gnome...) break?

if you are currently using 2.4 and want to go 2.6 then you will need extra tools... I never really do this, so not sure. I just compiled 2.6.7, but only on mdk10 which already had 2.6.3 ...
