kernel 5.6.8-1.521 doesnt load Xserver
Hello everyone,
I am new to Linux, and wanted to add NTFS support to Fedora 2. However, the kernel I installed from the downloaded iso's ( 2.6.5-1.358 ) loads Xserver, but doesn't support NTFS.
can anyone tell me what's wrong ?
Should I uninstall the kernel again and try to reinstall it ?
Or should I update Xserver ?
thank you.

xserver is nothing to do with ntfs; furthermore, the kernel does not start the x server: it gets started by init scripts; they are not part of kernel space.
afaik, ntfs support is removed from fedora due to legal apprehensions. you can compile a custom kernel with ntfs read and even write support (experimental!!!) compiled in. You have to decide whether you want to learn to compile kernels. If you know a lot about hardware already (i.e. what's PCI, PCMCIA, USB, SCSI, etc.), it won't be that hard to learn. You'll probably spend a few hours compiling kernels that don't work perfectly because you overlooked something, but it will make you a much more powerful user at the end of the day.

Hello Samsara,
I realise that NTFS has nothing to do with X server. I installed the NTFS RPM for the basic fedora package that came with the distro. I got it to work fine. I would like however to work with Fedora Core's latest kernel. Everything loads fine exept the X server.
When I boot the 2.6.5-1.358 kernel, everything works fine and the X server gets fired up in the beginning of the boot process.
When I boot the 2.6.8-1.521 kernel, everything works fine too, and gets initialised, but the X server doesn't get fired up in the beginning of the boot process. After the completion of the boot there is a warning message telling me X server cannot be started because it is not configured correctly.
Why does the first kernel load the X server with the config file, and the second one not ?
any suggestions
Thanx
