Kernel 2.6.6 panics when config'd for my P4 but not when config'd as i686

I have a new Dell P4 HT on which I've been running Fedora Core 2 and everything's been great. But the FC2 kernel is configured for an i686, so when it was time for me to build my own kernel (2.6.6), I configured it for my P4.

The result: kernel panics during boot (at varying points in the boot sequence, usually during or just after networking config).

I tweaked everything I could think of and rebuilt the kernel probably ten or fifteen times, but still got kernel panics every time. Finally I gave up on the P4 configuration and backed off to i686 -- and now it works great.

What gives? Thanks in advance for any help.

when you went back and it worked, was that the only thing you changed? Could it be that you accidentally did something like modularizing you root file system drivers?

just so you know, p4 is actually 686, just the latest branch of it. Take the .config file that works and try modifying ONLY the architecture. See if that works.
