kernel 2.6.32-3-686/nvidia driver issue

This is a reformulation of my previous thread "reinstalling nvidia driver", allowing to see where the problem is.

apt-get dist-upgrade led from kernel 2.6.30-1-686 to 2.6.32-3-686, where X server did no more work. Booting from 30-1 it still works fine. The Xorg.0.log with 2.6.30-1 reads (between *****):

********

************
I reinstalled successfully the nvidia driver (nvidia installer with legacy driver for the GeForce2 MX200 card) by first setting the env var for gcc 4.3 (as gcc is now 4.4). For Xorg.0.log Booting from 2.6.32-3, Xorg.0.log is identical to the above till line 121, i.e., the nvidia driver was loaded in both cases. The difference starts at line 122, as shown below between #####.

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!

(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "fb"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:

I tried "dpkg-reconfigure -p low xserver-xorg" to no avail.

Thanks for help.

Hi chiendarret,

If your old kernel is still running the drive,, and your new kernel isn't, you haven't updated your nvidia module correctly (its still using the old one). I haven't used nvidia on debian in a while but this page may be of help, make sure you follow all the steps to install your nvidia module correctly.

Hi Awatto:
You reminded me the correct things to do. What happened is that I had forgot to install the header files for the new linux kernel. I was mislead by the "successfully installed" statement from the nvidia installer. Once that was done, reinstallation of the nvidia driver went on smoothly, and "startx" now works for the new kernel. "glxgears" reports ca 13000 frames in 5 sec, which is extremely good for that old card. I used the nvidia installer instead of the "debian way" because I was at the former and so avoided to have to uninstall all files previously installed by the nvidia driver. I agree that the "debian way" is cleaner when using debian, however the nvidia installer just shows exactly which legacy driver to use. It seems to me that for old nvidia cards, the nvidia installer if far simpler than the "debian way". Thanks a lot
